The last of JK Rowling's Harry Potter's series was released today. I wasn't as excited about the sale of this 7th volume as compared to the last one. I walked into Sainsbury this morning and there was a bookstand at the main entrance. I took a look at the book but didn't buy it. Two years ago on the day Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince went on sale, I bought the book with great anticipation. I had finished reading the first 5 books and was eagerly awaiting the continuation of the story. Two years on, that book is still sitting on my bedside table collecting dust. I'm only done with half the book.
When the first Potter book was published, I didn't know what the big deal was. I only read about it at the Straits Times Forum when people wrote in to say that the book should be banned from schools etc. The reason why I started reading the series was my sister had bought the bookset and I was spending so many hours nursing Louisa I thought I could do with some reading while cradling my baby. To be honest, I got hooked. But why I've not finished reading the 6th book, I guess I had better things to do.
Jean told me this morning she'd bought the book. I told her I've not even finished reading the last one. Then I read in the papers that there's a price war on the book. The RRP is 17.99pounds but the average selling price is 8.99pounds. Some places are selling it for about 6.99pounds provided you spend a certain amount in their stores. The best deal is over at Asda. No conditions attached at 5pounds per book limited to 2 per customer. Even better still, if you order online, it's free delivery! I think I'm going to wipe off the dust of my last Potter book and finish reading it. Who knows by then the price may have gone down further.
