Ddukbokkie

hot and spicy rice cake

What I eat depends on who I'm hanging out with and what I have been recently introduced to. When I was at uni, I went throught phases of eating Thai, Italian and Taiwanese food, depending on who my housemates were then.

Lately, I'm into eating Korean food. It's strange I'm only hooked recently because I'd been watching Korean dramas for years. My first memory of eating Korean was at Seoul Garden. But that was forever years ago. Then my sisters brought me to an authentic Korean BBQ restaurant back in 2007. I remember once we placed an order, many complimentary side dishes were brought to the table. No wonder the items in the menu weren't cheap.

Anyhow, my friend V, prepared a Korean BBQ lunch when we went over to hers one weekend. She lives near a big Korean supermarket and had bought the store seasoned LA Beef ribs. I was hooked! They were so delicious! Last week, she brought me there and I bought the seasoned ribs, chicken and pork for A's birthday lunch over the weekend.  I wished I live near the supermarket too but I don't.  Then I found out they've got a branch in North London which is more accessible to me.  Yay!

The above dish was very simple to make. Just boil some water with anchovies (I used ikan bilis powder instead), stir in some hot pepper paste and hot pepper flakes, add in a handful of rice cakes and boil. Finally, throw in some julienne spring onions and boil further (I added some cooked chicken). Voila!  A hearty meal to warm the soul in this cold weather.  Mine's more soupy instead of saucy.  I think I added too much water.  That's the problem with me.  I cook by intuition.  But I'm sure loving the chewy rice cakes and the soup was very tasty.
